Reading !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is a reminder of so many people’s experiences with poor to mediocre quality of Subarus.
My Outback hasn’t been delivered, and if I back out now I might lose my $500 deposit, and test the limits of my wife’s patience. But I’m not going to back out because I’m just not willing to incur the poor fuel economy of my back-up choices. Plus they have higher purchase prices, so I guess I’m gambling that the money saved won’t be compensation for frustrating quality issues later.

The latest issue is very minor. What could possibly go wrong? You could have your engine replaced like me?

In this day and age, pretty much everything is a total crapshoot

Right, I’m sure that you can tell all of these Impreza owner just how painless your experience was, and how well Subaru treated you, right?
Aren’t we in the new era where we just swap out powertrains at the side of the road? Oh, wait, that’s battery packs for electric cars, right? Oh, wait, not even that . . .

I refuse to go to casinos, but apparently I am a gambler anyway.

We almost pulled the trigger on a 2020 Ascent and went with a boring 2019 Highlander instead because of all the issues people are having with the Ascents. So, I get your thoughts.
I loved everything about the Ascent, though. I still think about what if we’d have gotten it instead.

Could you summarize the issues with the Ascents? I thought I researched and came away thinking that it was minor stuff, did I not look carefully enough?
(Edit) Ugh, okay I see transmission issues on the Ascent . I assume this is the same tranny as will be in the Outback. Dang. I don’t know how I missed that.

It just struck me that my second choice in this search was a Jeep Grand Cherokee. FCA. Seems like about as much of a crapshoot, so I guess I’ll stay the course.

My local dealer has been really good with the issues I’ve had with my Outback, the oil consumption and then the engine wiring harness , because they have removed the engine three times. I’ve always gotten a Limited trim loaner but...... this should have never been an issue in the first place. My next car will probably be a Mazda or Toyota. I have to think that for every 100 cars they sell the ones that actually have these problems are a low percentage like 5-10%, however there are no publicly available statistics to back that up.

I have really liked our 2014 Mazda3, no issues on that, and our 2005 Mazda3 only had one issue that was fixed by Mazda under warranty fairly simply (collapsing air supply tube, IIRC). Not much rust risk in the south, so I don’t have that mad association. And they are a good value.
The 4Runner might have been a more serious consideration this time if there wasn’t such a premium on the perceived reliability (and other things that I didn’t love) . Hopefully I don’t find myself running screaming into a Toyota dealership after a Subaru ownership.
I’m glad to hear that your Subaru dealer treated you well during your experience. Even still, I agree, that should never have been an issue in the first place.

It also just struck me that I am a VW owner, so I guess that I truly am a gambler when it comes to new car purchases.

I am still baffled why people continue to support Subaru. The vast majority are cheap shit boxes with a high likelihood of having a time bomb under the hood. I jumped ship years ago. I’d rather risk potentially expensive small repairs and have an actual nice car the rest of the time over a mediocre car with potentially expensive repairs.

Sadly, all manufacturers are taking shitty cost saving measures to line their pockets and hose you in parts and service. If you want a reliable car, go 90's toyota or honda.
Brands that were known for reliability are being homogenized to the same level as brands that churned out crapwagons for fleet duty.

Speaking for myself, the price/package/fuel efficiency/performance was the right mix, accepting the knowledge of some quality risk. The pool of vehicles that matched with my preferences was small, and if I was simply looking for a compact sedan or hatchback, I’d go elsewhere (and have, until now).
You may need to sit in a new one, as the interior is slightly above mediocre now, although the bar keeps being raised, of course.
Perhaps the question that I would ask is, “What makes people committed fans of the Subaru brand given the spotty reliability history?”

I think Subaru has such a good name to many people because they made quirky, competent, properly sized cars in the 90s-2000s. They are still riding that wave of publicity and recognition even though they have strayed from what made them great as they chase greater sales numbers.
